Who we are

Central Christian Church Pocatello Idaho was established in 1915, partly in response to the rejection of a young man who asked to be baptized by another church. The very next Sunday, a small group of people met with the young man for the first service of what would become Central Christian Church Pocatello Idaho.

In 1916, a small building was erected on a 25 x 50 sq. ft. lot in the 300 block of North Hayes. Three years later, the building was moved to a purchased piece of land located at 6th and Lander. During the ministry of Charles D. Stout (1927-1932), three lots were purchased at what became our church’s permanent home at 8th and Center. Construction began in April 1939 and was completed through the great financial sacrifices of our members, despite Pocatello still suffering from the Great Depression.

On March 24, 1940, our church congregation of around 350 people marched from our old site to the new building. We still worship in a part of the sanctuary that was dedicated that day.

In 1955, with the rapid growth of the Baby Boomer generation, Pastor Jasper Havens led our church in launching a new building program to address the issue of overcrowding. On May 4, 1958, a three-stage building renovation and expansion program was completed, and dedication services were held.

In 1990, under the interim leadership of John Nesby, we celebrated our 75th anniversary. Eight years later, a renovation program was initiated to reconfigure our sanctuary and create more off-street parking. The renovation was completed in 1999.

On April 19, 2015, we celebrated 100 years of faithful service to our community and the world. Our church has always brought people together, whether through actively engaging in local interfaith activities and projects or providing avenues of hope to people in our community and beyond.

For over 107 years, our church has served Christ under the leadership of 20 different pastors, with one of the most enduring ministries being that of J. Russell Houston. We are currently pastored by Roger Bray, who was raised in our congregation, sent forth into ministry, then returned to minister with and to us.

Our church is part of the moderate mainline denomination known as the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). The Christian Church is part of one of the oldest and largest North American Christian movements. This movement was organized around the principal that Christians should be united not divided.

We continue to follow Christ and provide ministry and service in His name and by His authority. We know that we are following God who holds the future and empowers us to continue serving and witnessing. This is the DNA of our congregation, which has been handed down by countless people who provided a collective witness through faith and love from our doorsteps to the ends of the earth for over a century.
